The residents of Ackerman are full of southern charm in this small town. Don’t be alarmed if someone waves, nods or says hello and you don’t know them. That’s part of the southern hospitality in this town. Ackerman, the county seat, is the largest of the three towns in Choctaw County.
Ackerman offers your staples-grocery store, post office, hospital, schools, hardware store, dentist and pharmacies along with other great shopping experiences. These include a fabric store, the florist and gift shop, pawn/gun store, hair stylist salons, restaurants and more. And the best part about shopping in Ackerman is most businesses are family owned and operated. Downtown Ackerman is a buzz when the famous Pap’s Place is open for lunch and supper.
The Town of Ackerman also offers recreation activities with the Bruce Burney Memorial Walking Track and the Tom Glasgow Park where children and adults play baseball and softball year-round.
The walking track is also home to the Mississippi Blues Trail Marker in honor of Texas Johnny Brown and the Country Music Trail Marker in honor of Hoyt Ming.
Ackerman is also the home of two Mississippi Governors-J.P. Coleman and Ray Mabus. Mabus is currently serving as the U.S. Secretary of the Navy.
